Hi guys. For the last few days I noticed some problems with my hosting provider - website working very slow, and some images that I uploaded through WP dashboard disappeared. I am a lit bit worry about that, and I want to backup my Wordpress site. Could you please give me instruction or suggest the best way how to do that?

Hi Marcin. Your WordPress website consists of two main parts:
  • Files — Wordpress core, files of your WP theme, your uploads, plugins, etc.
  • MySQL Database — this is where all website's data is stored: website settings, posts, pages, plugins' data, comments, etc, etc

To make a complete backup of your website you will need to save files and database. There are few ways how you can backup your WordPress website.

Backup Wordpress Site Manually Using FTP and PhpMyAdmin

To do this type of Wordpress backup you will need to have experience with FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or hosting management panel (very often Cpanel).

Create a backup of your Wordpress files

Connect to your server via FTP (you can use FileZilla FTP client for example), and download all files of your website to you local computer. Or open Cpanel (or another hosting management panel), go to File Manager, select folder with your website files, compress them and download archive to your local computer.

Create a backup of your Wordpress MySQL Database

  1. Open PhpMyAdmin:
    Backup Wordpress MySQL Database
  2. Select your website's database in the right sidebar
  3. Click on Export in the top navigation:
    export wordpress database for backup
  4. Click OK and save Wordpress MySQL backup file on your computer

That is it. If this way looks difficult for you, there are alternatives options which will allow you to make a Backup without any technical knowledge in just few clicks.:

Backup Wordpress With Plugins

There are a lot of different plugins for Wordpress backups. I personally prefer «All-in-One Wordpress Migration» — this plugin is free and very easy to use.

Create a WordPress backup with All-In-One WP Migration" plugin

  1. Install and activate All-In-One WP Migration plugin in your WordPress Dashboard

  2. Click on the plugin name in the left sidebar

  3. Click on «Export To» button and select option «File».
    Export WP backup to file
  4. Follow the instructions and download archive with Wordpress backup to your local computer. This backup contains files and database. This backup will be also stored on your server, but as you've mentioned that you are worry about safety of your files with current hosting provider — it will be safer to store copy of backup on your local machine or cloud like Google Drive (you will need to upload backup file there manually if you use free version of All-in-One WP Migration plugin. With paid extensions for this plugin you will be able to save backups directly to different cloud storages, like: Amazon, DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc).
